LIMB DEFORMITY CORRECTION
In cases where a limb deformity is diagnosed, Dr Joubert may suggest corrective surgery, depending on the extent of the abnormality. In mild cases, non-surgical treatments may involve custom orthotics or shoe modifications, however, in more severe cases these methods may fail to reduce pain and restore mobility. In cases where limb deformities are caused by traumatic injury, congenital limb length discrepancies, knock knees, bow legs, neurofibromas, bone infections and tumours, deformity correction surgery may be advised. Prior to surgery, Dr Joubert will discuss the procedure with you, the risks as well as what to expect after surgery.
WHAT DOES LIMB DEFORMITY CORRECTION INVOLVE?
Limb correction surgery may involve acute or gradual correction techniques, depending on the case. It may involve an oestonomy, as well as a ligament repair, possibly arthroplasty and internal or external fixation.
For acute correction an osteotomy may be done in which the bone is cut into two, moving the bones to the correct position manually and securing it in place with internal fixation. Internal fixation involves screws and plates being fixed to the bone directly, internally. This fixation device is then tightened manually to realign the bone. Over time the bone will fuse in the correct position. This may also involve ligament repair and arthroplasty depending on the individual’s unique case.
In other cases, external fixation may be better suited. This involves the bone being cut into two, and a rigid frame being attached to the outside of the limb. This frame is then attached to the bone internally through wires and pins so that the frame can be adjusted daily, gradually realigning the bone.
For limb length discrepancies in children, Dr Joubert may surgically shorten the long leg, slowing its growth to allow the shorter leg to ‘catch-up’. For adults however, major length discrepancies may require internal or external fixation.
The type of surgery done is thus extremely case dependent and thus recovery will vary. What matters is that Dr Joubert will ensure that the treatment method chosen has your best interest in mind, and provide you will the best possible care.
