PROCEDURES
TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

If found that a hip replacement is necessary for functioning and pain relief, your orthopaedic surgeon will discuss the procedure with you and what you can expect after surgery. Dr Joubert prioritises a conservative approach to treatment, only reserving surgery for severe cases. Prior to surgery Dr Joubert will also discuss the restraints after a hip replacement, which may include running, jogging and jumping, however, overall a hip replacement is the most long term solution to hip functioning problems, with a hip arthroplasty lasting up to 20 years.

HOW IS A TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT DONE ?

A total hip replacement, otherwise known as arthroplasty, is done by removing the damaged cartilage and bone from the hip joint and replacing it with prosthetic components made from metal, ceramic, and plastic. When performing this kind of surgery, the hip joint is accessed through an incision into the side of the hip. The hip is made up of a ball and socket joint, so during surgery the muscle covering the joint is moved to gain access to the femoral head and the acetabulum. Once the damaged bone and cartilage is removed, the damaged parts of the acetabulum are shaved away to make space for the prosthetic component. The prosthesis is then wedged into the acetabulum. The femur is then hollowed out and prepped and the femur’s prosthesis is placed inside the bone. If an excision arthroplasty is done your surgeon may remove the head and neck of the femur entirely, and replace the entire section. The two prostheses are then connected, creating a new ball and socket joint and the mobility of the new joint is tested before closing the incisions.

WHAT WILL RECOVERY ENTAIL ?

After a major surgery such as this, you can expect some pain and swelling for the next few weeks. Recovery will depend on the reason for surgery. If it was for hip pain due to age-related arthritis, the severity of your condition will determine how invasive the deterioration of bone and cartilage was. After surgery your orthopaedic surgeon will discuss rehabilitation, physical therapy, and any lifestyle changes that might be required after a total hip replacement, and how best to manage your incisions post-operation. You should be able to return to normal activities in a few weeks and expect a full recovery in about a year.
